Too frequently the word menopause conjures up significant negative stigma around this phase of a woman’s life, with descriptions such as…old, dried up, past your prime and even women adopt these viewpoints perpetuating these negative stereotypes. Did you know in the Japanese culture rather than viewing menopause as a decline, they see it as a time of transition? A lived experience that signifies renewal, seasonality, and energy. In contrast to the Western world, where menopause is often linked to a loss of youth and fertility, Japan and other cultures, celebrate Menopause as a second spring—a time for regeneration and new beginnings.
Here are some key aspects:
• Japanese women celebrate menopause through the tradition of “kanreki”, which is seen as a time of rebirth and renewal, emphasizing the positive aspects of this phase.
• Women often receive gifts and participate in special ceremonies to commemorate this milestone (who doesn’t like gifts! Am I right ladies).
• Rather than associating it solely with aging or decline, they embrace it as part of the natural rhythm of life
• Interestingly, the Japanese language lacks a specific word for “menopause” or “hot flashes.”
• Instead, they use “konenki,” which encapsulates the idea of transition, renewal, and energy.
• Menopause is associated with wisdom, maturity, and emotional growth.
• Japanese culture values the transformative power of this phase, emphasizing the positive aspects of aging.
We can learn a lot from other cultures while embracing our own, on how they value aging, women and the menopausal transition. Menopause can be a time of great change and unique challenges, but with the right healthcare and wellness plan, one can experience a beautiful transition and optimal health. One where women are empowered, seen and heard, and encouraged to experience a full life in the healthiest way possible.
