Did you know that physical activity can help with menopause symptoms?
For example, one study found that middle-aged women who were physically active reported a better quality of life during menopause. Regular exercise can also release endorphins, which can help with mood swings and irritability. Over the years, key research findings from various studies, show exercise may reduce depressive symptoms, improve quality of life, and may positively influence hormone levels during menopause potentially contributing to mood regulations.
At Coastal Well Woman, we believe in the power of movement and exercise as part of your overall menopause health and wellness plan. One of my favorites is walking, and what a better place than the Central Coast and Santa Barbara! The only requirement is a good pair of shoes and off you go for a mindful and meditative experience.
Mindful walking starts by you choosing a space, setting your intention, picking an anchor (i.e., feet on the ground), focusing and refocusing your attention using all of your senses to immerse yourself into your environment (put away the phone and earbuds). It may take a little practice, and as you start walking, it may even take a few minutes before you begin to unwind. Give yourself space to truly let go, be mindful, and become one with your natural surroundings. Listen to the wind, the rustling of the leaves, hear the birds sing, notice the smell of the ocean air, the grass and plants…be present. As you relax, intentionally choose happiness & gratitude! It is normal for your mind to wander back to your normal daily thoughts, but let go, refocus and let yourself become one with your environment… again and again. Keep practicing, be mindful and walk!
It’s important to consider individual needs and preferences when designing an exercise program for menopausal women, so at Coastal Well Woman, we take into account any limitations, health concerns and symptom severity to provide a comprehensive and holistic approach which is aligned with the patient goals! With so many options, your exercise plan is almost limitless.
